Delhi Police Solve 26-Year-Old Murder Case, Main Accused Arrested in Bihar

New Delhi, May 3: The Delhi Police have finally cracked a sensational murder and robbery case that dates back 26 years. This case was so old that many believed it would never be solved. However, thanks to relentless efforts and technical investigations, the main accused has been apprehended in Bihar.

The case was registered in 2000 when a woman was brutally murdered, and millions in cash were stolen. The accused, Naresh Mukhiya, also known as Nageshwar Mukhiya, had been on the run for years and was declared a ‘proclaimed offender’ by the court.

The incident occurred when Naresh Mukhiya was working in a building in Delhi. On the second floor lived a family that included Asha Chhabra, the victim. Reports indicate that the accused learned that Asha had sold her house and kept around 3.5 to 4 million rupees in cash at home.

He then devised a robbery plan with his accomplices. One day in January, they arrived at the scene. The front door was open, allowing the accused to sneak inside and start rummaging through the cupboards. Suddenly, the woman entered and raised an alarm. In that moment, the assailants overpowered her, strangling her with a phone cord before fleeing with approximately 800,000 rupees and other valuables.

The case remained unsolved for years. The police made multiple attempts to investigate, but the accused kept changing his location. He lived in Siliguri, spent some years in Kolkata, then moved to Ahmedabad, and eventually returned to Samastipur district in Bihar.

Recently, a special police team led by Inspector Pukhraj Singh reopened the case. Based on information from ASI Pradeep and Head Constable Narendra, the team utilized technical surveillance and local intelligence to trace the accused’s location.

On May 2, 2026, a joint team comprising SI Niranjan, ASI Pawan, Head Constable Sachin, Mukesh, Vikrant, and Constable Manoj raided Mamurpur village in the Singhiya police station area of Samastipur district and successfully arrested the accused.

At the time of his arrest, the accused was living a modest life. He had previously worked as a laborer and had been running a small grocery store in his village for some time. Investigations revealed that he was an alcoholic and had made considerable efforts to change his identity over the years to evade capture.
