New Delhi, July 29: The Delhi Police have dismissed claims circulating on social media that a protester was shot during the demonstration at Jantar Mantar on July 20.
The police labeled the viral videos and associated claims as misleading, stating that medical evidence does not support these assertions.
In a post on the social media platform X, the Delhi Police clarified that allegations of a protester being shot during the demonstration in central Delhi were not corroborated by the medico-legal case (MLC) report prepared after the incident.
The police stated, “The claims circulating on social media that a protester was shot during the protest on July 20 do not align with the findings of the MLC investigation.”
According to the police, the MLC report mentions a lacerated wound in front of the right tragus (a small prominence of cartilage near the ear) and categorizes the injury as ‘blunt’ trauma.
The statement added, “In the doctor’s opinion, the injury was minor, and there is no evidence of a gunshot wound. Therefore, the claim of injury from a gunshot is not substantiated by the medical examination results outlined in the MLC.”
The police also urged citizens to exercise caution when viewing and sharing information on social media platforms.
They advised, “People are encouraged to verify such claims with reliable sources before sharing.”
An MLC, or medico-legal case report, is a medical document prepared in cases of injuries or situations that may require legal investigation. Law enforcement agencies often rely on such reports to determine the nature of injuries and assign responsibility in cases.
The protest on July 20 in the national capital turned violent when a crowd led by the ‘Cockroach People’s Party’ attempted to march from the Jantar Mantar protest site towards Parliament.
Police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the protesters, resulting in clashes and several arrests.
