Delhi Weather: Mercury Soars, Relief Delayed
On Sunday, the maximum temperature in Delhi reached 42.1°C, and the IMD predicts it could climb further to 44°C on Monday, accompanied by dusty winds. Despite increasing humidity, there are no signs of rainfall in the immediate forecast for the city. Residents are advised to avoid direct sun exposure and stay hydrated, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Adding to the discomfort, the IMD has also issued a warning for hot night conditions in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh for June 9 and 10, indicating elevated nighttime temperatures that may disrupt sleep and raise health risks for vulnerable populations.
Uttar Pradesh Sizzles as Agra Hits 44.8°C
The heatwave conditions are even more intense in Uttar Pradesh, with Agra clocking the highest temperature at 44.8°C on Sunday. Several other districts, including Varanasi, are experiencing sweltering heat, prompting the IMD to issue heatwave alerts in 19 districts across the state.
Local authorities are urging residents to limit outdoor activities and are expected to ramp up emergency response services to address heat-related illnesses.
Nationwide Forecast: Rains Expected from June 10
While northern states are reeling under heat stress, the IMD has forecasted the arrival of monsoon rains in many parts of the country beginning June 10. The southern and coastal western regions, as well as the northeastern states, are expected to receive heavy rainfall, which may eventually push northwards.
For the north and central belt, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana, temperatures are projected to remain high for at least the next 4-5 days, with the possibility of rainfall and slight cooling after June 12.
Relief on the Horizon?
While monsoon activity is expected to pick up in other parts of India this week, Delhi-NCR will likely continue to endure oppressive heat through the first half of June. The anticipated rains after June 12 may bring some much-needed respite to the parched northern plains.
Until then, experts recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, wearing light clothing, staying indoors during peak heat hours, and paying special attention to the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
