Chandigarh, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Congress MP Manish Tewari called for increased tolerance from governments and greater responsibility from journalists during a recent event in Chandigarh. His remarks followed an incident where two journalists were allegedly assaulted by Delhi police after asking questions at a program hosted by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Speaking to a news agency, Tewari expressed concern over the rising intolerance of governments. He stated, “It is very unfortunate that governments are becoming increasingly intolerant. A journalist was mistreated in Delhi for asking questions, while a retired official was taken from a park in Sangrur over a social media post. These are not good signs for democracy.”
Tewari emphasized the need for a balance between government tolerance and journalistic responsibility. He noted, “On one hand, governments need to be more tolerant, and on the other, journalists must show greater responsibility. Without this balance, democracy cannot be strong. Criticism is a crucial part of democracy.”
He stressed that any form of criticism should be fact-based and urged caution regarding the use of abusive language on social media platforms. “The kind of abusive language people use on social media today needs serious discussion. It is not good for democracy,” he added.
Additionally, Tewari addressed the poor condition of infrastructure during the monsoon season. He remarked, “It is unfortunate that roads in Chandigarh get washed away as soon as it rains. We call it a beautiful city, but just look at the state of the roads after a rain spell. The administration and contractors need to take this matter seriously.”
