New Delhi, June 13: The Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will host the ‘Mother Yamuna Cleanliness Campaign’ on Sunday at 28 ghats along the Yamuna River. This major initiative, themed ‘One Resolution – Clean Yamuna,’ aims to restore the river’s dignity, clean its banks, raise environmental awareness, and foster public participation into a widespread movement.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will lead the cleanliness drive at the Geeta Colony ghat, working alongside thousands of citizens to strengthen the commitment to a clean, pure, and life-giving Yamuna. The campaign will commence at 6 AM at various ghat locations.
Gupta emphasized that the Yamuna is not just a river; it represents Delhi’s cultural, religious, and environmental heritage. Protecting and cleaning the Yamuna is not solely the government’s responsibility but also a duty for every citizen. This campaign aims to spread that message and encourage collective participation. The cleanliness of the Yamuna is not a one-day event but a continuous public movement requiring involvement from all societal sectors.
On Sunday, simultaneous cleanliness and awareness activities will take place at various ghats, banks, and riverfront areas. Key locations include Chilla Village ghat, Nizamuddin ghat, Thokar No. 14 Geeta Colony ghat, Thokar No. 18 Gandhi Nagar ghat, and many more.
Around 500 social, religious, educational, and volunteer organizations, along with thousands of volunteers and residents, will participate in this campaign. To ensure broad public support, several MPs and senior representatives will also be present at various sites.
During the campaign, citizens will be encouraged to pledge not to dispose of worship materials, flowers, or idols in the river, avoid using plastic and single-use items, and keep the riverbanks clean. The goal is not just to remove waste but to transform the protection of the Yamuna into a public movement.
Gupta noted that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the nation has gained new direction in cleanliness, environmental protection, river rejuvenation, and development based on public participation. Inspired by the Prime Minister’s vision for a ‘Clean India’ and nature conservation, the Delhi government is committed to making the Yamuna’s revival a public movement. The cleanliness of the Yamuna is not just an environmental issue; it is also our responsibility to future generations.
Last year, the ‘My Yamuna, My Duty’ campaign made significant strides in cleaning the Yamuna and its ghats, with thousands of volunteers collecting over 12 tons of waste for scientific disposal. The enthusiastic public support for that initiative proved that when the government and society work together, significant positive changes are possible.
