New Delhi, March 19: The Delhi High Court has instructed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to promptly decide on the registration application for K. Kavitha’s proposed political party, ‘Telangana Praja Jagriti.’ This directive was issued during a hearing of a petition filed by Kavitha, a leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
Justice Amit Bansal’s single bench emphasized the need for swift action on the application, which alleges that the ECI has not taken any steps regarding the application filed under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The petition states that ‘Telangana Praja Jagriti’ was formally established during a general meeting on January 19, 2026, where the party’s constitution was adopted, and officials were authorized to apply for registration. The application, along with necessary documents such as the party constitution, notarized affidavit, a list of 151 members, certified minutes of the meeting, and the required fee, was submitted to the ECI on January 23 and accepted on January 27.
However, the petition claims that since then, the ECI has not initiated any legal processes, such as reviewing the application, issuing public notices, or providing an opportunity for a hearing. This inaction has been described as arbitrary and unjust, violating Articles 14 and 19(1)(c) of the Constitution.
Kavitha also argued that local body elections are currently underway in Telangana, and the delay is preventing her party from participating in upcoming elections with its name and symbol.
Following the hearing, the Delhi High Court directed the ECI to make a swift decision on the application, effectively resolving the petition.
Notably, K. Kavitha, the daughter of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, left the BRS last year due to differences and announced her intention to form a new political party. She has expressed her desire to contest in the upcoming assembly elections, with Siddipet or Bodhan being her preferred constituencies.
