New Delhi, February 19: Parents in the capital have received significant relief regarding the issue of fee hikes and the non-disclosure of audit reports from private schools. The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Delhi government concerning the audit reports of 1,681 private schools.
The court questioned the government on why, despite previous arrangements to make audit reports public, the current administration has failed to upload these reports on their website and what actions have been taken based on them.
Saurabh Bhardwaj, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has made serious allegations against the government. He stated that this is a major victory for parents and the middle class. He accused the government of claiming to conduct audits of private schools but not making the reports public or taking any concrete action against any school.
Bhardwaj posed questions to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Education Minister Ashish Sood, asking why the audit reports have not been made public. He emphasized that if the government has completed the audits for all schools, what is the difficulty in posting them online? He also alleged that satisfactory answers were not provided to questions raised in the assembly regarding this matter.
He pointed out that the government had announced upon taking office that it would conduct audits of all private schools and take action in case of irregularities. Referring to former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he noted that his administration audited a limited number of schools each year and made the reports public. In contrast, the current government has failed to demonstrate transparency despite claiming to conduct comprehensive audits.
During the hearing of a public interest petition related to this issue, the High Court demanded a clear response from the government regarding the fate of the audit reports for the 1,681 schools and why they have not been made public. Following the court’s notice, the government is now required to submit a response within a specified timeframe. This issue is gaining political traction.
The Aam Aadmi Party has described this as a fight for parents and has pledged to stand with the public. All eyes are now on the government’s response and what stance it will take in court moving forward.
