New Delhi, May 8: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that the Delhi government will carry out a comprehensive structural audit of all government schools in the capital. The aim is to identify deficiencies and assess the actual status of essential facilities within these schools.
During the audit, the strength and safety of school buildings will be evaluated. Basic amenities such as drinking water, toilets, cleanliness, and fire safety will also undergo thorough inspection. The decision follows a surprise visit by the Chief Minister to a government school after receiving complaints regarding basic facilities. During her visit, she criticized the previous government for failing to implement necessary improvements despite promoting their education model extensively.
On Friday, the Chief Minister inspected the Rajkiya Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Roop Nagar Number Four, reviewing the school’s facilities in detail. She interacted directly with students in various classrooms, gathering information on water supply, fire safety, toilet conditions, cleanliness, heat relief measures, teacher availability, and educational arrangements.
Students informed the Chief Minister that there is inadequate provision of clean drinking water in the school. Water coolers and RO systems have been out of order for a long time, forcing most students to drink directly from taps. They also reported that the condition of the toilets is extremely poor, with many doors broken and a lack of regular cleaning and water supply.
During her inspection, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta found that the school’s fire safety system was also non-functional. In light of these irregularities, she reprimanded officials, stating that any negligence regarding children’s safety will not be tolerated. She instructed the relevant authorities to make immediate improvements to all safety measures in the school. Students also raised concerns about the shortage of teachers.
The Chief Minister emphasized that schools are temples of education. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sensitivity, accountability, and addressing the real needs of students in the education system. To this end, a comprehensive structural audit of all government schools will be conducted to accurately assess the fundamental deficiencies and necessary facilities.
She noted that approximately 700 schools in Delhi require new buildings and significant redevelopment, as many of their structures are 40 to 50 years old and have deteriorated severely. This audit will evaluate the strength of school buildings, drinking water supply, toilets, cleanliness, and fire safety. Orders are being issued to the relevant departments for this purpose.
Rekha Gupta questioned the previous government’s education system, stating that while there was extensive promotion of the education model in past years, the reality is now evident in the condition of government schools. If the former government had genuinely strengthened the education system, children would not have to complain about basic facilities. Education cannot improve through advertisements alone; real facilities, a safe environment, and quality education must be ensured in schools.
The Chief Minister asserted that the Delhi government is committed to concrete, results-oriented actions to strengthen the future of students, rather than engaging in superficial politics. Her administration has been consistently working for the past year to enhance basic facilities in government schools and develop modern infrastructure. The government’s goal is to provide clean drinking water, hygienic toilets, smart classrooms, digital facilities, and safe infrastructure in schools.
