Victoria, June 28: During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day visit to Seychelles, President Patrick Herminie emphasized that India has always been a reliable friend to Seychelles. He made this statement at a dinner held in honor of PM Modi on Saturday.
According to the Seychelles presidential office, President Herminie highlighted the long-standing strong ties between the two nations during the dinner.
He stated, “India has always been a trusted friend of Seychelles. Our people and the large Indian community here feel this sentiment just as warmly.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the partnership between India and Seychelles during the dinner.
The event was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Speaker of the Seychelles National Assembly Azarel Ernesta, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Barry Faure, and other cabinet members.
The presidential office mentioned that 2026 is a significant year for both countries, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Seychelles and India. Their partnership has been based on democratic values, maritime cooperation, and strong people-to-people connections.
Additionally, this occasion coincides with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ republic status, making PM Modi’s visit even more special.
The presidential office stated, “PM Modi’s presence as the chief guest at the National Day celebrations showcases the strength of India-Seychelles relations. Both countries are now looking forward to the next 50 years of partnership.”
Diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles were established in 1976, and since then, their relationship has continuously strengthened. India has collaborated with Seychelles in various sectors, including infrastructure, defense, health, and maritime security.
On Saturday, PM Modi arrived in Victoria, where he received a warm welcome for this historic occasion. This marks his second state visit to Seychelles.
Upon arrival at the airport, President Herminie welcomed PM Modi and accorded him formal honors. The welcoming ceremony included several senior leaders from Seychelles and members of the Indian community, along with cultural performances that reflected the strong ties between the two nations.
During a special event on Saturday afternoon, PM Modi presented the Seychelles government with a fast patrol vessel named ‘Lespwar,’ which means ‘hope’ in Creole.
Additionally, India provided Seychelles with ten utility vehicles, five laser radial boats, and six ambulances.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that this assistance will help strengthen Seychelles’ maritime security and defense capabilities.
