New Delhi, May 11: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government is intensifying its efforts to control dust pollution. It has made the use of high-density dust screens mandatory at all construction and demolition sites in the National Capital Region.
According to new directives issued by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the minimum thickness for green nets used at all Construction and Demolition (C&D) sites is now set at 100 GSM. All project operators must comply with this requirement immediately.
This significant decision addresses the severe dust pollution caused by construction and demolition activities. The order aligns with the dust pollution control guidelines issued by the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) and the inspection SOPs for C&D projects.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that the fight against pollution in Delhi is progressing with utmost seriousness and urgency. “We are working at every level—policy changes, scientific measures, technology-based monitoring, and strict enforcement—to establish a robust safety framework to protect Delhi from pollution,” he said.
The new system is part of an important initiative. Previously, it was mandatory to cover construction sites and exposed construction and demolition materials with tarpaulin or green nets, but no minimum technical quality for green nets was established. By setting 100 GSM as the minimum standard, the Delhi government aims to ensure that dust control measures are not merely superficial but genuinely effective.
Minister Sirsa emphasized that high-density dust screens are crucial for effective dust control. By establishing a minimum standard of 100 GSM, the government ensures that dust control at construction sites remains practical, measurable, and enforceable. This will enhance compliance at the ground level and allow for more effective management of airborne dust.
He further stated that the Delhi government is committed to ensuring that the impact of every anti-pollution regulation is visibly evident on the ground.
The government is also rapidly developing Dust Portal 2.0, which will serve as a centralized monitoring and control system for all construction and demolition sites in Delhi. Registration of C&D sites on the Dust Portal has already been made mandatory. This will help strengthen monitoring, track compliance, and enhance transparency. The new decision regarding the 100 GSM green net will further bolster these efforts.
The order issued by the DPCC has been sent for immediate compliance to several major civil and infrastructure agencies, including MCD, NDMC, DDA, DMRC, CPWD, and PWD.
