Delhi Government Expands Free Ration Scheme to Families Earning Up to ₹2.5 Lakhs Annually

New Delhi, May 26: The Delhi government has announced an increase in the annual income limit for the free ration scheme from ₹1.20 lakhs to ₹2.5 lakhs. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared this news via the social media platform X. She stated that families earning up to ₹2.5 lakhs annually will now be eligible for free ration from the Delhi government. The aim of this initiative is to include more needy families under the food security program.

Additionally, the cabinet decided to implement a new digital system to make the ration distribution process more transparent and free from corruption. The government will now use a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) system to deliver rations to beneficiaries. This means that digital currency will be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

According to the government, beneficiaries can only use this digital amount to purchase ration. This will enhance transparency in the ration distribution system and eliminate the role of middlemen. It will also effectively curb ration black marketing, fake beneficiaries, and the arbitrary actions of ration dealers.

The Delhi government believes that the increase in the income limit will make millions of new families eligible for this scheme. This is particularly beneficial for the lower-middle class and those families with limited income who were previously excluded due to earlier criteria.

The government has also clarified that the new technology-based system will make the ration distribution process more accountable and effective. The digital payment system will ensure that government assistance reaches eligible individuals directly, preventing any irregularities.

Officials believe that the previous income limit was too low, causing many needy families to miss out on the benefits of the government ration scheme.
