New Delhi, February 11: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government has taken a significant step to strengthen and modernize the capital’s public transport system. In a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, approval was granted for Metro Phase-V(A).
The ambitious project will develop three new corridors, covering a total length of 16 kilometers and including 13 metro stations. The estimated cost of the entire project is ₹12,014.91 crores, with the Delhi government’s budget share set at ₹2,940.46 crores. The project aims for completion by 2028.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that this project is a major step towards realizing the Prime Minister’s ‘7-C Vision’ for transportation, which emphasizes shared, accessible, convenient, congestion-free, energy-efficient, clean, and state-of-the-art transport.
She highlighted that strengthening public transport is essential for achieving environmental protection and net-zero emissions goals, and this expansion will serve as a milestone in that direction. The Chief Minister affirmed the Delhi government’s commitment to making the capital world-class and pollution-free, working alongside the central government to create an integrated and citizen-centric transport system.
Gupta described this decision as an investment in Delhi’s future, noting that the new corridors will not only alleviate traffic pressure but also help control pollution. The approved corridors include routes from RK Ashram to Indraprastha (via Central Vista), Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj, and Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Domestic Terminal-1 (IGDT-1). Out of the 13 stations to be built, 10 will be underground and 3 elevated. This expansion will facilitate seamless interchange with the existing metro network and improve connectivity between airports, commercial centers, and residential areas. The government aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles and provide citizens with a clean, efficient, and integrated transport system.
The most significant corridor in Phase-V(A) is proposed from RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, spanning 9.913 kilometers. This line will feature 9 stations and will pass through the Central Vista area, directly linking Delhi’s administrative, cultural, and historical sectors to the metro network. The Central Vista corridor will connect all duty buildings, making it easier for government employees and visitors to reach their offices. This facility is expected to benefit approximately 60,000 employees and around 200,000 passengers daily.
Additionally, this corridor will help reduce pollution and the use of fuels like petrol and diesel, making life more convenient for residents. Key locations such as RK Ashram Marg (under construction), Shivaji Stadium, Central Secretariat, CCS Buildings, India Gate, War Memorial-High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam, and Indraprastha will be directly connected to the metro. This corridor will not only enhance passenger convenience but also facilitate access to national events, administrative activities, and tourist sites. A total of ₹9,570.40 crores will be spent on this corridor, with ₹2,337.24 crores coming from the Delhi government.
The second important corridor in Phase-V(A) is proposed from Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport Terminal-1 (IGDT-1). This corridor will be 2.26 kilometers long and will feature one station. It will provide crucial access for air travelers, ensuring direct, fast, and seamless metro connectivity to the airport. This will reduce reliance on private vehicles and taxis, alleviating traffic pressure in the airport area. The project’s cost is estimated at ₹1,419.64 crores, with ₹351.86 crores funded by the Delhi government.
The third corridor in Phase-V(A) is proposed from Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj, covering a total length of 3.9 kilometers and featuring 3 stations. This corridor will enhance metro connectivity in southern and southeastern Delhi, making commuting easier for local passengers. The estimated cost for this corridor is ₹1,024.87 crores, with ₹251.36 crores covered by the Delhi government.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the expansion of the Delhi Metro is a crucial foundation for the overall development of the capital. The current network, along with the new corridors proposed under Phase-V(A), will make the transport system in Delhi and NCR more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly. She emphasized that the metro’s expansion will provide passengers with smooth and timely travel options, reduce traffic pressure on roads, and effectively control pollution from vehicles. The Delhi government is continuously empowering public transport with the goal of making the capital a world-class city, and this metro network expansion is a solid step in that direction.
