Delhi Extends School Holidays for Nursery to Class 8 Till January 15 Amid Cold Wave

The Delhi government has announced an extension of school holidays for all government and private schools across the National Capital Region until January 15, 2026. This decision primarily affects students from nursery to Class 8, aiming to protect young children from the severe cold wave gripping the city.

Rising Cold and Fog Impact Daily Life

In recent days, Delhi and its surrounding areas have experienced a sharp drop in temperatures along with dense fog during early mornings. The poor visibility has raised safety concerns for school transport and children commuting to schools. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for the coming days, prompting the education department to extend the winter vacation period accordingly.

Parental Concerns and Private Schools’ Response

Despite the official government order, some parents have expressed their worries on social media platforms. Many have noted that certain private schools in Delhi are reportedly planning to reopen even amid the harsh cold conditions. This has led to calls for consistent adherence to safety guidelines across all schools.

Demands for Uniform Safety Measures

Parents are urging the authorities to intervene to ensure uniform safety protocols in every school. Medical experts warn that severe cold in the mornings can increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, colds, and coughs among children.

Guidelines for Higher Classes

While schools remain completely closed for nursery to Class 8 students, schools for Classes 9 to 12 may operate with certain relaxations. Considering board exam preparations, some schools have opted for online classes. If physical classes resume for higher classes, timings will be adjusted to help students avoid the coldest morning hours.

Similar school closures have been announced in neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh including Noida and Ghaziabad. Schools in Delhi are expected to reopen normally from January 16, 2026, subject to improvement in weather conditions.
