Kolkata, August 30: The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB) announced significant relaxations in counseling rules for B.Tech admissions on Sunday, following protests from students and teachers.
Previously, WBJEEB had barred students who had already secured admission through the centralized counseling process from participating in the decentralized counseling system.
The board clarified that B.Tech candidates who did not qualify through the centralized counseling process would now be allowed to participate in the decentralized counseling system based on their Higher Secondary (10+2) exam scores.
This decision came after strong opposition from both student and teacher groups, who questioned the merit-based restrictions. They argued that such limitations would prevent previously admitted students from upgrading their admissions.
In response to the protests and criticisms, the board issued a new notification on Sunday, lifting the restrictions.
The new notification stated that candidates who secured admission through this year’s centralized online counseling process could also participate in the common online decentralized counseling process.
It further mentioned that a complete revised notification regarding the online decentralized counseling would soon be published on the board’s official website.
The notification added, “The revised counseling schedule will also be published separately on the board’s official website.”
An official from the state’s Higher Education Department explained that the previous restrictions aimed to prevent multiple claims for seats, unnecessary blocking of seats, and seat migration by candidates who had already secured admission.
The official noted that both students and teachers opposed these restrictions, leading to their removal.
