Building Collapse in South Delhi Claims Five Lives, FIR Filed Against Owner

A building collapse in South Delhis Satya Niketan has resulted in five fatalities and injuries to eleven others, prompting police action.

New Delhi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident unfolded in South Delhi‘s Satya Niketan area on September 6, when a building housing students collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals and injuring eleven others. Rescue operations are still ongoing as several injured remain under treatment.

According to a statement from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), ten injured patients were admitted to the JPNA Apex Trauma Center following the collapse. Among these, four were brought in dead, while one patient succumbed to injuries later. Three others are currently hospitalized, with one undergoing surgery for severe injuries. A patient with minor injuries was discharged after observation.

The police have registered a case against the alleged owner, Hariram, and others at the South Campus police station. Reports indicate that renovation work on the ground floor may have contributed to the building’s collapse. Multiple teams are being formed to locate those responsible.

Rescue teams utilized gas cutters and JCB machines to remove debris and rescue eleven individuals trapped beneath the rubble. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM, with most victims being students residing in the building, which was designed to accommodate around 40 residents. The owner of the building reportedly resides in Gurugram.

The Delhi Fire Brigade received notification of the incident at approximately 1:30 PM and dispatched fire engines to the scene immediately. Authorities noted that the building, which was 40 to 50 years old, had a basement and five upper floors. Many of the students living there were studying at Delhi University’s South Campus in the Dhaula Kuan area.

Initial reports suggest that renovation work in the basement, combined with heavy rainfall, could have played a role in the disaster. Following the incident, teams from the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) arrived on-site with fire engines and ambulances to commence rescue operations.

Victims were transported to AIIMS, where Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited to assess their conditions. Earlier in the day, both Chief Minister Gupta and Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu toured the site to monitor ongoing rescue efforts.
