Delhi is grappling with severe pollution as winter fog and smog combine with vehicle emissions to degrade air quality. To tackle this and offer a gift to its residents for the new year, the government is set to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) subsidy policy.
Transport Minister Pankaj Singh announced that Delhi’s EV Policy 2.0 will be implemented within the next 15 to 20 days. This policy aims to reduce pollution while providing financial benefits to buyers of electric vehicles. Under the new scheme, buyers of electric cars and other EVs will receive subsidies along with exemptions on road tax and registration fees.
The policy offers a subsidy of ₹10,000 per kilowatt on two-wheelers, up to a maximum of ₹30,000. Women buyers could receive even higher incentives, potentially up to ₹36,000. The government aims to cut pollution from the transport sector by 25–30%. Special concessions may also be provided for private electric cars. With 100% waiver on road tax and registration fees, the on-road price of EVs in Delhi will be significantly reduced.
In addition to state subsidies, the central government will continue to offer incentives based on energy consumption (per kWh) for two- and three-wheelers. This combined support is expected to boost EV adoption in the capital.
Transport Minister Pankaj Singh highlighted that earlier measures like ‘Red Light On, Engine Off’ showed limited impact on pollution levels. Now, the focus is fully on promoting electric vehicles and stricter enforcement. The ongoing ‘No PUC, No Fuel’ campaign has resulted in over one lakh pollution certificates being issued, and over 1,300 fines have been imposed on non-compliant vehicles at city borders in the past three days.
Regarding pending subsidies, the minister confirmed that payments, which had been stalled for the past year, are now being cleared. However, approximately ₹45 crore remains to be disbursed and will be settled soon.
