Agartala, August 1: Olympian Deepa Karmakar has congratulated Asmita Day for winning a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games 2026, held in Glasgow.
Karmakar spoke with Asmita, praising her remarkable achievement. She stated, “There is no shortage of talent in the Northeast. When Asmita was very young, she trained at the Tripura Sports School. She once told me that she wanted to become like me and achieve what I have.”
Deepa Karmakar, who competed in the Rio 2016 Olympics, was the first Indian woman gymnast to participate in the Olympics.
On Friday, Asmita Day secured her gold medal by defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach in the women’s 48 kg final. This victory is historic as it marks India’s first gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games.
In a thrilling and closely contested match, Day triumphed over Quach with a score of 2-1. Maintaining her composure in the final stages, she achieved her biggest win of the Commonwealth Games campaign. The Indian judoka showcased excellent strategic skills and defensive discipline to secure her victory.
Asmita Day received congratulations from President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha for her success.
So far, India has won three medals in judo at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Following Asmita Day’s gold, Harsh Singh also claimed a gold medal, making him the first male athlete from India to win gold in judo at the Commonwealth Games, while Asmita is the overall first athlete to achieve this. Additionally, Yamini Maurya secured a silver medal.
