Australia’s Coach Defends Batting Lineup Despite Poor Performance Against South Africa

Andrew McDonald expresses confidence in Australias batting lineup and hopes for Steve Smiths swift recovery ahead of the New Zealand series.

New Delhi, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : Andrew McDonald, head coach of the Australian cricket team, has expressed unwavering confidence in his batting lineup, despite their disappointing performance against South Africa. Following a series loss in Cape Town, McDonald emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook as the team prepares for upcoming challenges.

He is optimistic that star batsman Steve Smith will recover in time for the home Test series against New Zealand. With a demanding international schedule on the horizon, the team aims to ensure Smith’s neck injury is fully healed before his return. Additionally, Cameron Green’s recovery from injury and Josh Inglis’s recent performances in foreign Tests could lead to various batting combinations as Australia gears up for the New Zealand series.

In an interview with cricket.com.au, McDonald stated, “This is still a very good cricket team with many talented players. We need to balance who comes in and what the next decisions are. If you look at the batting unit, I believe we are in a stronger position than at the start of the South Africa tour.”

He acknowledged the challenges faced during international play, especially in foreign conditions. “Playing abroad is always tough, and many teams struggle to win outside their home grounds. This is not an excuse; we felt we were good enough to win the series here,” he added.

Smith had relied on painkillers to manage his discomfort but ultimately could not pass the final fitness test, leading to his absence from the decisive Test match at Newlands. McDonald clarified that the decision to play or not rested entirely with the experienced batsman, emphasizing the team’s preference for Smith to return only when fully fit.

“You saw how positive he looked during the net session the day before. However, you never know how someone will recover. The medical team and Steve did everything possible, but he wasn’t ready to play the next morning. He made that call, and we trust our players, especially our senior ones, to know their bodies well. I believe Steve’s decision was the right one,” McDonald remarked.

While questions linger about Smith’s future, McDonald is hopeful he will be available for the first Test against New Zealand in Perth next month. “I don’t have any additional information at this time. Our plan is for him to be available for the Perth Test against New Zealand,” he stated.

He emphasized the need to understand the root cause of Smith’s neck issue to prevent future complications. There will be opportunities for him to play Shield cricket, allowing for adequate preparation and match practice before the Test match.

McDonald acknowledged that Marnus Labuschagne struggled to capitalize on his opportunities in South Africa, but he remains confident in the batsman’s ability to regain form. “We backed Labuschagne for this tour. Moving forward, we need to reassess. He is still a very good cricketer, and whenever he returns to state level, he performs better than others. However, he did not make the most of his chances on this tour,” he noted.

As Australia shifts its focus to the four-Test series against New Zealand, the fitness of Smith and the middle-order batting combination will be critical issues for selectors to address.
