
Glasgow, August 1: India concluded its remarkable campaign in the para events at the Commonwealth Games 2026, securing a total of 7 medals, including 3 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze.
Jhandu Kumar was the first Indian to open the medal tally for the country. In a two-group competition, Jhandu topped Group B with a best lift of 130.9. He easily surpassed Uganda’s Denis Mbajira (114.1) and Australia’s Ben Wright (110.9) to secure his place in the medal race.
However, in the combined standings, Nigeria’s Riluwan Idris clinched the gold medal with an overall best lift of 132.8. England’s Matthew Harding won the silver medal with a lift of 131.0. Jhandu’s lift of 130.9 was sufficient to secure the bronze medal, finishing just 0.1 behind Harding in a fiercely contested battle for silver.
Additionally, two Indian athletes made it to the podium in three events, including the Women’s Shot Put F57, Men’s Shot Put F57, and Men’s 100m F47 race.
In the Women’s Shot Put F57 event, India bagged one gold and one bronze medal. Para-athlete Sharmila Dhankhar achieved first place with a best throw of 9.81 meters in the finals. Meanwhile, Shilpa Kanchugarkoppalu Shaila secured bronze with a best effort of 7.26 meters. Ghana’s Jinabu Isah claimed the silver medal with a top throw of 8.65 meters.
Following this, in the Men’s 100m T47 race, India secured both gold and silver medals. Dilip Mahadu Gavit won the gold medal with a time of 10.71 seconds, while Mohammad Basil Morsingnakath earned silver with a time of 10.83 seconds. The bronze medal was claimed by England’s Kevin Santos with a time of 10.85 seconds.
In the Men’s Shot Put F57, India achieved a double podium finish with both silver and gold medals. Soman Rana won the first gold medal for the country in this event with a winning throw of 13.40 meters. Shubham Juyal secured the silver medal with a throw of 13.28 meters on his final attempt. Cameroon’s Cedric Idris Lekezho Azmadji took home the bronze medal with a best effort of 12.57 meters.
