Chennai, August 1: MK Stalin, the leader of the DMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Vijay regarding the Mekedatu Dam issue.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Stalin stated, “The Chief Minister wanted to work alone, but now he finds himself isolated.” He emphasized that political leaders and farmer associations across Tamil Nadu had warned that negotiating with Karnataka over the Mekedatu Dam would be futile. “We had requested the Chief Minister not to engage with Karnataka,” he added.
Stalin pointed out, “Our experience shows that the only effective way to deal with a state that has clearly stated it cannot provide water to Tamil Nadu is through legal means. Karnataka views Tamil Nadu merely as a downstream channel for its surplus water.” He suggested that the new Chief Minister may have believed he could secure Cauvery water by visiting Karnataka, ignoring all prior warnings and sending an envoy to the neighboring state.
He further noted that after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directed Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka government closed the door, stating, “Please do not come right now.” In his post, he remarked, “We anticipated this situation and had warned about it earlier. At the very least, the Chief Minister should now consult and reach a consensus on the crucial Cauvery issue for Tamil Nadu.”
Stalin also highlighted that after advising against the visit, the Karnataka Chief Minister has called for an all-party meeting on August 2, demonstrating that Karnataka’s political parties are united on this matter. He questioned, “When will the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu convene an all-party meeting? Can he do it or not?”
