Deep Cultural Ties Between Assam and Manipur Highlighted by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, May 19: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the profound cultural and spiritual connections between Assam and Manipur on Tuesday. He stated that the Vaishnav traditions of these two northeastern states continuously strengthen the region’s shared civilizational heritage.

Posting a video from the revered birthplace of the medieval saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardev at the Batadrava Than, the Chief Minister noted that the musical resonance of Assam’s traditional instrument ‘khol’ and Manipur’s ‘pung’ has once again brought the cultural unity of the Northeast to life.

In his post, CM Sarma wrote, “Assam and Manipur are deeply connected through Vaishnav traditions. The melodic waves of Assam’s khol and Manipur’s pung at the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev have once again enlivened the cultural unity of the Northeast.”

The Chief Minister shared a video showcasing devotional performances and traditional instruments from both states at this historic religious site located in Assam’s Nagaon district.

The cultural bond between Assam and Manipur dates back centuries. It is closely linked to the spread of Neo-Vaishnavism initiated by Srimanta Sankardev in the 15th and 16th centuries in Assam. His reformist devotional movement, centered on devotion to Lord Krishna, social harmony, and spiritual inclusivity, has significantly impacted large parts of the Northeast, including Manipur.

Historians believe that during the 18th century, under the patronage of the then Meitei kings, Vaishnavism became deeply ingrained in Manipuri society. The ‘satra’ culture of Assam, along with its devotional music and performing arts, gradually influenced the religious and cultural traditions of Manipur.

Traditional instruments also symbolize this shared heritage. Assam’s ‘khol,’ a clay percussion instrument central to Sattriya traditions, and Manipur’s ‘pung,’ an essential part of Manipuri devotional dance and music, are integral to Vaishnav rituals and performances.

Over the years, cultural exchanges through festivals, devotional music, dance traditions, and religious institutions have continually strengthened the historical ties between Assam and Manipur.
