Mumbai, April 5: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced an extension for the SIM binding deadline until the end of 2026. This mandate aims to combat digital crimes and scams. Under this regulation, users will need to re-login to social media applications, such as WhatsApp, on secondary devices every few hours. Only the primary device linked to the user’s SIM will remain logged in permanently.
Previously, the government set March 30, 2026, as the final date for implementation, which was first introduced in November 2025. However, according to a report from MoneyControl, this deadline has now been pushed back. The new deadline is expected to be the end of this year. This continuous re-logging requirement may lead to significant inconvenience for users.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and Facebook, is currently in talks with the DoT to establish a technically feasible approach. WhatsApp boasts over 400 million active users in India, many of whom access their accounts on multiple devices.
