Dalai Lama Departures for Knee Surgery in Delhi Amidst Supportive Followers

New Delhi, June 5: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama departed from Kangra Airport this morning, heading to Delhi for a knee surgery. This visit is primarily health-related, as he is scheduled for a procedure on his left knee under the care of specialized doctors in the capital.

For a considerable time, the Dalai Lama has been residing in McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh. Since fleeing Tibet in 1959, he has sought refuge in India and made Dharamshala his permanent home.

The Dalai Lama has been experiencing significant discomfort due to knee pain. After the surgery, he plans to travel to Ladakh at the end of June, where he will stay for an extended period. Details regarding his programs and stay in Ladakh will be announced later.

Before his departure to Delhi, a crowd of followers gathered at the airport. Devotees braved the rain outside to catch a glimpse of their spiritual leader.

Two women shared that they arrived early in the morning to see the Guru. One mentioned that they came to support him during his treatment. “We pray for his good health. May God restore him quickly,” she expressed.

The Dalai Lama has played a significant role in popularizing Buddhism globally. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his efforts to keep the Tibetan issue alive while advocating for peaceful resolution.

After leaving Tibet in 1959, the Dalai Lama has been leading the Tibetan exile government and community from Dharamshala. This followed China’s military presence in the Himalayan region in 1950, claiming to liberate “farmers and slaves” in Tibet.
