Cynthia Erivo Addresses Trolls After Defending Ariana Grande at Event

Mumbai, May 28: Hollywood actress and singer Cynthia Erivo has broken her silence on a past controversy. She recounted her experience of being trolled on social media after coming to the aid of her co-star Ariana Grande during an event in November 2025. Erivo stated that her actions were a natural human response, but her behavior was misrepresented, which significantly affected her mentally.

The incident occurred during a promotional event for the film “Wicked,” held at Universal Studios Singapore. The entire cast was present, greeting fans when suddenly, a man breached security and rushed towards Ariana Grande. Before anyone could react, Cynthia Erivo stepped in to protect Ariana.

Following this event, numerous memes and TikTok videos about Erivo began circulating online.

Reflecting on the incident, Erivo said, “At that moment, no one else did anything. My mind was focused on getting that man away. My first instinct was to ensure my co-star’s safety. People didn’t see the whole video. That man wasn’t leaving Ariana alone, and I had to keep pushing him back.”

The actress further explained, “The videos going viral mocked my body, stature, and appearance. People targeted my looks and tried to portray me as overly controlling.”

Cynthia added, “People assumed that because I appeared physically stronger than Ariana Grande, my intention was to control her. This perception was deeply misguided and hurtful. What I did was simply a natural reaction to protect Ariana, but social media twisted it into something else.”

She noted that the fallout from this controversy impacted her career and award campaigns. “I felt that instead of understanding me, people began forming assumptions about me,” she said.

Cynthia Erivo concluded, “I realized my humanity was misrepresented. What I did instinctively became a subject of mockery and controversy online. People formed opinions based on my appearance. I don’t want to find myself in a situation where I am judged or trolled again.”
