Cyber Fraud in Mumbai: Scammers Exploit Gas Company Name to Steal Millions

Mumbai, March 29: A new and alarming method of cyber fraud is rapidly spreading in Mumbai, where scammers are targeting individuals using the name of the city’s gas company, Mahanagar Gas. This fraudulent scheme, involving APK files, has raised significant concerns among residents. In the past month alone, several cases have emerged, resulting in losses of nearly ₹1 crore.

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has created uncertainty around gas supplies, which cybercriminals are exploiting. Scammers pose as officials from Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), sending messages and making calls to individuals. These communications often warn of outstanding gas bills and potential disconnection, prompting immediate reactions from fearful victims.

A recent victim, 20-year-old businessman Mitul Doshi from Mulund West, fell prey to this scheme. He received a message threatening to disconnect his gas service. After paying ₹1,150, he received a call from someone claiming to be an MGL official, who sent an APK file under the guise of a “bill update.” Upon downloading the file and entering his banking information, Mitul lost ₹11.82 lakh from his accounts.

Another incident occurred in Malad East, where a 75-year-old man was tricked into downloading an APK file under the pretense of a ₹10 transaction. Within 20 minutes of installing the file, ₹8.59 lakh was withdrawn from his account.

According to police, this fraud is executed in a highly organized manner. Initially, victims receive alarming messages, followed by reassuring calls, and finally, malware is installed on their devices through the APK file. This malware grants scammers access to OTPs, banking details, and full control of the victim’s phone.

Cyber police have urged the public to remain vigilant. Officials emphasize that no gas company will ever request payments or updates via APK files. Residents are advised to use only official websites or apps and to avoid unknown links or files. If anyone falls victim to such scams, they should immediately contact the cyber helpline at 1930 to secure their bank accounts.
