CPI(M) Faces Internal Strife Ahead of Kerala Assembly Elections, Says VD Satheesan

Kochi, March 19: The political atmosphere in Kerala is heating up as the state approaches the 2026 Assembly elections. VD Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, has launched a strong critique against the ruling CPI(M). He claims that the party’s internal conditions are deteriorating, revealing deep-seated divisions.

On Thursday, Satheesan remarked, “It took 33 years for the party to decline in West Bengal, but CPI(M) in Kerala appears to be heading in the same direction at a much faster pace.” He noted that after nearly a decade in power, the party’s internal disagreements can no longer be concealed.

Voting for the 140-seat Kerala Assembly is scheduled for April 9, prompting a rapid shift in the state’s political landscape. While the Left Front faces increasing criticism, the Congress-led UDF and BJP-led NDA have only released their initial list of candidates so far.

After returning from Delhi, Satheesan spoke to reporters at Cochin International Airport, highlighting that even senior CPI(M) leaders are now openly criticizing the party, indicating the severity of the situation.

He pointed out that traditional supporters and allies of the party are growing disillusioned. Trust in the government has waned due to its functioning over the past decade, and discontent is no longer confined to the opposition.

Satheesan also hinted at further political upheaval in the coming days, stating that similar warnings had been issued previously but were overlooked.

Regarding the opposition front, he mentioned that the UDF has resolved most issues concerning candidates and will soon release a second list of around 40 nominees.
