CPI-ML to Contest 10 Seats in West Bengal Elections with Left Front Alliance

Kolkata, March 16: The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation (CPI-ML) will contest 10 assembly seats in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections in alliance with the Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

In a statement released by the party’s West Bengal state committee on Monday, the decision to ally with the Left Front aims to remove the “corrupt” All India Trinamool Congress government and prevent the “fascist” Bharatiya Janata Party-RSS coalition from gaining power.

The statement read, “Our decision is also aimed at reviving leftist forces in the state. After several rounds of discussions with Biman Bose, the chairman of the Left Front, and CPI(M) leadership, we have decided to contest 10 assembly seats this time. The names of the candidates for these seats will be announced later.”

CPI-ML had also contested the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections but did so without any alliance or seat-sharing arrangement with the Left Front. At that time, the party leadership criticized CPI(M) for viewing both the Trinamool Congress and BJP as equal adversaries and urged the public to choose any political party other than the BJP.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress has decided to end its seat-sharing agreement with the Left Front, which has been in place since 2016, and will contest all 294 assembly seats independently.

The Left Front has released its first list of candidates for 192 assembly seats, with more names to be announced later. The CPI(M) leadership has continued its seat-sharing agreement with the All India Secular Front.

The assembly elections in West Bengal will take place in two phases next month, with voting scheduled for April 23 and April 29, and counting on May 4.
