Sulochana Chavan: A Luminary in Lavani Music

Mumbai, March 17: Sulochana Chavan will always be remembered in the world of Marathi music and Lavani. The emotion and strength in her singing were the results of her dedication. Remarkably, she never received formal training; instead, she honed her skills by listening to gramophone records, showcasing her passion and talent.

Born on March 13, 1933, in the Phanaswadi area of Mumbai, her interest in singing blossomed from a young age. Without any formal education in classical music, she practiced by listening to gramophone records for hours, meticulously understanding melody and rhythm. This dedication transformed her into an extraordinary singer.

Her first song was recorded when she was just nine years old for the Hindi film “Krishna Sudama.” With the help of music director Shyam Babu Pathak, she recorded this debut track, which marked the beginning of her flourishing career.

Throughout her journey, Sulochana collaborated with legendary singers such as Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Shamshad Begum, and Geeta Dutt. At the age of 16, she sang alongside Manna Dey in the Bhojpuri Ramayana. Her powerful singing and understanding of music even impressed Begum Akhtar. Sulochana lent her voice to songs in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Tamil, and Punjabi.

Her significant breakthrough in the world of Lavani came with the song “Hich Majhi Lakshmi,” which redirected her career towards this genre. She proudly embraced the title “Lavani Samrajni,” given to her by Acharya Atre. She believed that the beginning of a Lavani performance should be strong and impactful, a philosophy evident in all her songs.

Over her illustrious career, Sulochana received numerous awards and honors, including the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2010, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2012, and the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2022. She also received prestigious accolades such as the Lokshahir Patil Bapurao Award and the Ram Kadam Award.

Her career spanned over 60 years, during which she captured the hearts of audiences through solo performances, playback singing, and live shows.

Sulochana Chavan passed away on December 10, 2022, at the age of 92.
