New Delhi, March 17: India has firmly dismissed the latest report from the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), labeling it as biased and motivated. The Indian government stated that the commission has distorted India’s image in a selective manner over the years.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to media inquiries, acknowledging India’s awareness of the USCIRF’s 2026 annual report. However, he emphasized that the comments made about India are entirely biased and driven by ulterior motives.
He stated, “For many years, USCIRF has misrepresented the situation in India. The commission relies on dubious sources and ideological narratives rather than objective facts. Such misrepresentations undermine the commission’s credibility.”
According to the Foreign Ministry, India is a vibrant multicultural society. Yet, USCIRF repeatedly attempts to cast doubt on India, reflecting a prejudiced agenda rather than genuine concerns.
The spokesperson urged USCIRF to focus on the attacks on Hindu temples in the United States, the rising intolerance against people of Indian origin, and incidents of harassment, rather than selectively criticizing India.
He noted that these incidents are serious issues that warrant significant attention.
India has previously raised objections to USCIRF reports, asserting that the commission misrepresents facts about the country for political agendas.
The Foreign Ministry reiterated that India, home to 1.4 billion people, hosts followers of nearly all major religions, and has a strong tradition of harmonious coexistence among various communities.
India also stated that such reports attempt to undermine its democratic and tolerant image, which will not succeed.
