Kolkata, August 5: The Calcutta High Court has extended the interim stay on the demolition of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s party office in Amtala until August 21. The hearing took place before Justice Shubhra Ghosh.
During the proceedings, the state’s Advocate General Surjit Nath Mitra requested additional time from the court. Consequently, the court scheduled the next hearing for August 18 at 2 PM and directed that the interim order be maintained until August 21.
As a result of this ruling, no action can be taken to demolish the party office during this period. Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee faced a setback in another case, as the High Court denied him permission to travel abroad for eye treatment and dismissed his petition.
Justice Sougat Bhattacharya’s bench stated that during the previous hearing, they had advised Banerjee to consult specialists at Kolkata’s SSKM Medical College and Hospital. The court indicated that further decisions would be based on the hospital’s report.
However, senior advocate Rebecca Maimon John, representing Banerjee, informed the court that her client did not wish to visit SSKM Hospital. Following this, the court denied permission for treatment abroad and dismissed the entire petition.
It is noteworthy that after the High Court’s advice to consult SSKM Hospital during the July 20 hearing, Abhishek Banerjee approached the Supreme Court regarding the matter. However, the Supreme Court bench returned the case to the Calcutta High Court, instructing it to make a decision within seven days.
In accordance with this directive, the hearing took place on Wednesday, after which the High Court denied permission for foreign travel. While Abhishek Banerjee received relief regarding the Amtala party office, he faced a legal setback due to the denial of permission for eye treatment abroad.
