Kolkata, August 2: Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin’s return to Kolkata has sparked political discussions. BJP leader and spokesperson Kiyaa Ghosh criticized former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and previous Left-Congress governments for their lack of support for Nasrin.
Ghosh stated, “First, I welcome Taslima Nasrin back to West Bengal. You asked me what happened when she was forced to leave during the CPI(M) regime. Neither the CPI(M) nor Congress had the courage to keep or bring her back. They showed no willpower.”
She further added, “Due to vote bank politics, Mamata Banerjee did not wish to bring Taslima Nasrin back. However, the current government is responsible for her return. They have welcomed her. The BJP government now respects freedom of speech.”
It is noteworthy that Taslima Nasrin returned to Kolkata on Friday and participated in an event organized by the Secular Mission, Human Rights Beyond Frontiers Foundation at Rabindra Sadan. During the event, she emphasized that criticizing Islam or speaking the truth about it is not an attack on Muslims. She stressed the need for reform, development, and freedom within the Muslim community.
During this event, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari praised Taslima Nasrin, recognizing her as an esteemed author. He stated, “Nasrin can come to the city whenever she wants. The new government has ensured freedom of expression and restored constitutional and fundamental rights, allowing everyone full freedom to travel in the city and state.”
