Nashik, May 30: Bhakt Charandas Maharaj from Nashik has responded to the recent controversy surrounding the 4,300-year-old Pashupati Seal. He refuted claims made by American historian Audrey Truschke, asserting that India’s Sanatan culture and civilization are thousands of years old, supported by substantial historical and archaeological evidence.
In an interview, Bhakt Charandas Maharaj stated, “India’s Sanatan culture and civilization are ancient, with ample historical and archaeological proof.” He emphasized that the Pashupati Seal has long been associated with Lord Shiva’s form as Pashupatinath in Indian tradition. He criticized foreign historians for questioning such cultural symbols and beliefs.
He further noted that the Sanatan civilization is interconnected with the world. While cultures evolve over time, the discovery of the Pashupati Seal clarifies that the Harappan civilization is part of our ancient heritage. Therefore, the claims made by the American historian are entirely incorrect.
Recently, India’s Ministry of Culture shared an image of an ancient seal on social media, stating that it depicts the figure of Lord Shiva in a yogic posture.
The ministry’s post on X read, “This nearly 4,300-year-old steatite seal, discovered in undivided India’s Mohenjo-Daro, illustrates a figure seated in a yogic posture, widely recognized as ‘Shiv-Pashupati.’ The figure is in the original Padmasana position, surrounded by various animals. Although the ancient site lies beyond today’s borders, India remains a vibrant guardian of this heritage. The yogic posture, Shaivite symbolism, and spiritual essence depicted in the Pashupati Seal continue to thrive in India’s temples, daily worship of Shiva, yoga traditions, and cultural life.”
Following this, Audrey Truschke raised questions about the claims linking the Pashupati Seal to Lord Shiva, asserting that the figure is not representative of Shiva.
