Controversy Erupts in Chennai Over Newborn Custody Dispute

Chennai, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : A 27-year-old daily wage worker in Chennai has filed a police complaint alleging that her newborn son, born at a private fertility clinic, was given to a couple who now refuse to return him. The police have registered a case against the clinic’s doctor and the couple from Thiruvottiyur. Investigators are working to determine how the child came to be with the couple and whether the arrangement was meant to be temporary.

K. Megala, a resident of Chengalpattu, stated that on the advice of the doctor, she left her newborn son in the care of the couple for three months. However, she claims the couple is now unwilling to return the child. Authorities are currently interrogating all parties involved, noting inconsistencies in the statements that require further examination.

According to police reports, Megala had a four-year-old son when her husband passed away from natural causes in February 2025. At that time, she was three months pregnant and struggling financially.

In her complaint, Megala recounted seeing an advertisement on social media offering free treatment at a hospital in Kolathur. She visited the facility during her seventh month of pregnancy and informed the medical staff about her financial situation.

On July 29, 2025, she gave birth to a son at the hospital. Megala alleges that hospital staff initially informed her that the newborn needed to be isolated. She was only allowed to see her baby ten days after delivery.

She also mentioned that another doctor introduced her to a couple in Thiruvottiyur who were unable to have children. The doctor suggested that they care for the baby for three months, after which he would be returned to her. Megala agreed to this temporary arrangement.

However, when she recently contacted the couple to reclaim her son, they refused to comply. Following this, she sought assistance from the police.
