Mumbai, May 7: The proposed roadblock by the Congress party on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway, aimed at addressing the issues faced by farmers in Madhya Pradesh, has been labeled an anti-public move by Hemant Khandelwal, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In response to the Congress’s planned farmers’ protest, Khandelwal stated that this roadblock serves private political interests. He described it as an act that would hold the general public hostage, potentially disrupting emergency services like ambulances and fire brigades. He criticized the movement as irresponsible and detrimental to the people, trade, and overall order in the state.
Khandelwal further asserted that Congress and Jitu Patwari should apologize for their deceit rather than stage protests on farmers’ issues. He emphasized that Congress lacks the moral authority to advocate for farmers. Under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s leadership, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh is fully committed to purchasing every grain of wheat from farmers.
He questioned decisions made during Congress’s rule, claiming that false promises of loan waivers had turned farmers into defaulters. The BJP government has since deposited nearly 2800 crores, helping farmers escape the defaulter category. Khandelwal urged Congress to clarify the wheat support price in 2003-04 and whether farmers’ grains were purchased at that price.
Khandelwal also highlighted that the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, established for farmers’ welfare, were ignored by previous Congress governments. He noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership since 2014, significant steps have been taken to ensure farmers receive a profitable support price. During Congress’s 55 years in power, the wheat support price was set at only five hundred rupees. In contrast, under Modi, it has increased to approximately 1600 rupees per quintal over the past twelve years. The Madhya Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is currently purchasing wheat at 2625 rupees per quintal, including bonuses for farmers.
Khandelwal reiterated the BJP government’s unwavering commitment to farmers, ensuring no injustice occurs. The state government is actively working to increase farmers’ incomes, reduce costs, secure fair prices, and mitigate agricultural risks. Madhya Pradesh ranks first in pulse production and second in food grain and oilseed production, a testament to the government’s farmer-friendly policies. He concluded by advising Congress to reflect on their actions and apologize to the farmers before staging protests.
