Mumbai, August 3: The counting of votes for the by-election in the Datia assembly constituency of Madhya Pradesh has concluded. Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh triumphed over BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari by more than 6,000 votes.
This marks Congress’s second consecutive victory in Datia. Voting took place on July 30, and the counting was held on Monday. The counting process spanned 15 rounds. In the initial and fifth rounds, the BJP candidate held the lead, but by the 13th round, the Congress candidate surged ahead, steadily increasing their margin. Although Ashutosh managed to reduce the gap towards the end, the final results confirmed Congress’s victory.
In the 2023 assembly elections, Congress had also emerged victorious in this constituency, with Rajendra Bharti defeating former state home minister Narottam Mishra. However, Bharti was disqualified due to a conviction in an FD case, receiving a sentence of over two years. This led to the by-election, where both the BJP and Congress put forth significant efforts. With this win, Congress has now secured victories in two consecutive elections.
The by-election voting saw a turnout of 71.44%. The counting took place at the Polytechnic College, beginning with postal ballots, followed by the counting of EVM votes starting at 8:30 AM.
A total of 21 counters were set up for the counting process, with 20 designated for EVM votes and one for postal ballots. Each counting counter was staffed by three officials, adhering to the Election Commission’s protocols.
In a notable move prior to the counting, Congress suspended former MLA Rajendra Bharti for alleged indiscipline, accusing him of campaigning against the party in the by-election.
