Mumbai, May 9: The Congress party has taken a strong stance regarding the issues faced by farmers in Madhya Pradesh. Following a blockade on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway, police have registered cases against several Congress leaders. Opposition leader Umang Singhar stated that the Congress is prepared to face police brutality and even imprisonment for the sake of farmers.
On Thursday, Congress organized multiple protests along the Mumbai-Agra National Highway to highlight the plight of farmers. The blockade disrupted traffic significantly, prompting police action against various Congress legislators and other leaders.
In response to the FIR filed by the police, Singhar criticized the state government, saying, “When the voice for farmers’ rights was raised across the state, the BJP chose to respond with FIRs instead of solutions.” He noted that cases have been filed against him, along with numerous Congress legislators and hundreds of leaders.
Singhar questioned whether demanding a minimum support price for crops is a crime. He emphasized that discussing crop insurance, fertilizers, and electricity should not be considered a wrongdoing. He warned the state government that Congress is willing to endure police violence and imprisonment if necessary.
Commenting on the police action, Singhar remarked that the government’s fear is evident, but farmers remain undeterred. “The fight for the annadata (food provider) will be fought with even greater strength,” he asserted. Currently, wheat procurement is ongoing in the state.
The Congress party alleges that this year, wheat production has significantly increased, yet the procurement is low. This situation forces many farmers to sell their wheat to middlemen, causing widespread concern and distress among the farming community.
