Bhopal, April 10: The Congress party staged a statewide protest in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, alleging delays in wheat procurement. Meanwhile, the purchasing process has commenced in four divisions, including Bhopal and Indore.
Protests erupted across several districts, where Congress workers and farmers surrounded collector offices, chanting slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.
As the Rabi marketing season begins, the wheat procurement issue has escalated into a significant political controversy.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Umang Singhar, led a protest in Sehore, the home district of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He accused the government of causing delays in procurement, forcing farmers to sell their crops at lower prices out of necessity.
Singhar also questioned the discrepancy between the number of registered farmers and the amount of wheat procured so far, alleging that middlemen are benefiting from the situation rather than the farmers.
Meanwhile, Jitu Patwari visited the agricultural produce market in Sagar district to speak with farmers. During his visit, farmers raised concerns about disorganization, delays in procurement, a shortage of gunny bags, and a lack of basic facilities in the markets.
Patwari stated that these issues reflect poor ground-level management, despite the government’s claims. He accused the administration of forcing farmers to wait for days under difficult conditions, highlighting a lack of administrative will.
The Congress party has also accused the government of failing to fulfill promises of better prices and timely procurement, which has increased financial pressure on farmers.
On the other hand, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav asserted that the state is fully prepared for procurement. He mentioned that thousands of procurement centers have been established, and all necessary arrangements, including gunny bags, are being ensured. Help desks and control rooms have also been set up for farmers’ convenience.
As of Thursday, wheat procurement at the minimum support price has started in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Narmadapuram divisions, while the process will begin in Jabalpur, Rewa, Sagar, and Shahdol divisions on April 15.
The state government is purchasing wheat at a rate of ₹2,625 per quintal, which includes a ₹40 bonus.
