New Delhi, March 10: Congress MP Sukadev Bhagat addressed several significant issues on Tuesday, including the controversy surrounding the T20 World Cup trophy being taken to a temple. He remarked that former cricketer and current TMC MP Kirti Azad was part of the team that won the World Cup for the country. Azad is a respected MP, and the concerns he raised are indeed noteworthy.
Bhagat stated, “Sports should always be played in the spirit of the game. When the country wins, it is a victory for all of India. It is not the victory of a single community, group, or individual.”
The controversy arose when TMC MP Kirti Azad criticized Gautam Gambhir and Jay Shah, alleging that taking the T20 World Cup trophy to a Hindu temple in Ahmedabad was inappropriate. Azad emphasized that the trophy symbolizes a secular nation, not a single religion. He also reminded everyone that the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team consisted of players from various communities.
Bhagat noted that since the BJP government came to power, there has been an increase in such divisive issues. He expressed concern that society is being fragmented based on different identities.
In response to a statement by Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Arun Bharti, Bhagat said that this is an internal matter of the NDA, but numbers are crucial in a democracy. He commented, “When such statements arise without the necessary numbers, it seems odd. NDA allies should pay attention to this. If smaller parties start making such statements and there is no control, it appears ridiculous.” Bharti had expressed his desire to see Chirag Paswan as the next Chief Minister of Bihar.
On international conditions, Bhagat stated that the current situation resembles a war, and it is essential to consider its impact on India. He emphasized the need to discuss India’s economy, potential energy crises, and the safety of Indians living abroad. Approximately 8 to 8.5 million Indians reside in that region, making their safety paramount.
Bhagat remarked that dissent is a healthy tradition in democracy. He reminded the BJP that they too protested during Manmohan Singh’s government, especially during the Commonwealth Games.
He also noted that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel, some individuals walked out of the event. Therefore, dissent should be viewed as a strength of democracy.
Regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments on the Iran-Israel conflict, Bhagat responded that no problem can be solved through attack or war. He stated, “An attack can never be a good step. There should always be dialogue and communication between parties. War itself is a problem and cannot be a solution to any issue.”
