Mumbai, February 18: The Maharashtra government has annulled its decision to provide 5% reservation for socially and educationally backward Muslim communities. Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad condemned this decision, stating that the government has pushed marginalized groups further into darkness instead of integrating them into the mainstream.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, MP Gaikwad wrote, “On February 17, the Maharashtra Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance made a grave mistake. With this decision, all previous government orders and circulars regarding the issuance of caste certificates and validity certificates for individuals belonging to the Special Backward Class-A (SBC-A) of the Muslim community have been officially revoked. This means that the reservation for the Muslim community has been canceled.”
Gaikwad further expressed, “We strongly condemn this decision. Instead of implementing the 5% reservation announced in 2014 for education and employment, the government has nullified existing procedures. By citing the interim stay from the High Court and the expiration of the ordinance, the government has attacked the rights of the Muslim community.”
In her post, she questioned, “Isn’t it hypocrisy to proclaim ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ while simultaneously closing the path to obtaining necessary documents for reservation? Although the Bombay High Court approved the 5% reservation for the Muslim community in education, it has yet to be implemented in Maharashtra. Failing to enforce court-approved reservations poses a threat to democracy.”
She shared the government order along with her post, stating, “Instead of bringing marginalized sections of society into the mainstream, this government has pushed them back into darkness.”
