Congress Leader Criticizes Government Over Sonam Wangchuks Arrest and Release

Jaipur, March 14: Reactions have intensified following the immediate cancellation of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk’s detention. Congress leader Pratap Singh Khachariyawas targeted the central government, stating that Wangchuk’s arrest was fundamentally wrong and faced widespread opposition across the country.

In an exclusive interview with a news agency on Saturday, Khachariyawas remarked that the Home Ministry’s recent order for Wangchuk’s release clearly indicates that the government has acknowledged its mistake. He emphasized that Wangchuk is respected not only in India but globally. His efforts and approach towards environmental and social issues have been recognized both nationally and internationally. Arresting such a person was unjust.

Khachariyawas further stated that with Wangchuk’s release, the central government must answer to the public and clarify the reasons behind his arrest. He insisted that the government should publicly apologize to Wangchuk.

It is noteworthy that the Home Ministry announced on Saturday that, after discussions, the government decided to revoke Wangchuk’s detention immediately. The ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring all necessary measures for the security of Ladakh.

According to the ministry, Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, 2025, following a serious law-and-order situation in Leh, as ordered by the district magistrate. The ministry noted that nearly half of the detention period under the NSA had already elapsed.

The ministry also mentioned that the government is in continuous dialogue with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the local population. However, the ministry pointed out that the ongoing strikes and protests have proven detrimental to societal peace. This has negatively impacted various groups, including students, job seekers, traders, tour operators, and tourists, affecting the overall economy of the region.

It is significant to note that the debate over Wangchuk’s detention and subsequent release continues at both political and social levels across the country. Opposition parties, including Congress, are labeling it a government blunder, while the central government claims the action was necessary to maintain law and order.
