Chandigarh, March 20: The Congress party has issued a notice to its fifth MLA regarding cross voting in the recent Rajya Sabha elections in Haryana. The notice was sent to Congress MLA Jarnail Singh from Ratia by the party’s disciplinary committee. Previously, Haryana Congress in-charge B.K. Hariprasad had publicly named four MLAs—Renu Bala, Shaili Chaudhary, Mohammad Ilyas, and Mohammad Israel—who were involved in cross voting.
In the Rajya Sabha elections held in Haryana, both the BJP and Congress secured one seat each. Reports of violations of ballot secrecy and cross voting were noted during the election process. Sanjay Bhatia from the BJP and Karamveer Bauddh from Congress emerged victorious, while BJP-supported independent candidate Satish Nandal faced defeat.
A total of 88 MLAs participated in the voting. Two MLAs from the Indian National Lok Dal, Arjun Chautala and Aditya Devilal, abstained from voting. In the 90-member assembly, the BJP holds 48 seats, Congress has 37, the Indian National Lok Dal has two, and independent candidates hold three seats.
As the vote counting concluded, leaders from both parties claimed victory for their respective candidates. Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner alleging attempts to interfere with the election’s fairness. Citing the sensitivity of the matter, he requested a meeting with a party delegation before the results were announced.
In response to Congress’s victory in Haryana, MP Kumari Selja congratulated the MLAs and expressed confidence that the party was assured of its win, which guided their campaign strategy.
