Srinagar, March 20: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reacted to the recent transfers of officials by the Election Commission in West Bengal. He took to the social media platform X to express that such widespread transfers only occur in non-BJP governed states, particularly in West Bengal, but this is not surprising.
Abdullah stated that West Bengal will once again prove what he has always believed: election officials do not win for political parties; their leaders do. He asserted that any attempts by the Election Commission to manipulate constituencies will not alter the outcomes. On counting day, he believes Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will win by a significant majority.
It is noteworthy that Mamata Banerjee had previously posted on X, criticizing the Election Commission for targeting Bengal. She described the actions as unprecedented and deeply concerning. Over 50 senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, ADG, IG, DIG, District Magistrates, and Superintendents of Police, were arbitrarily removed from their positions before the formal notification of elections. She characterized this as political interference at the highest level, not mere administrative action.
On March 16, Banerjee had written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, expressing her concerns about the transfers of several IAS and IPS officers in the state. She alleged that these large-scale transfers occurred immediately after the announcement of the assembly elections, without any solid justification or accusations.
The Election Commission has indeed made significant changes in the state administration. Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty and Home Secretary JP Meena have been transferred, along with several senior officials from the police department, including the Director General of Police and the Commissioner of Kolkata Police.
