Kolkata, July 2: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who faced an egg and dung attack in the presence of police, has received unexpected backing from a seasoned leader of her political rival, CPI(M).
Marxist leader and former Rajya Sabha member, Debashis Bhattacharya, condemned the attack on Moitra via a social media post. He emphasized that despite being political opponents, he felt compelled to voice his dissent regarding the incident.
Bhattacharya stated, “Mahua Moitra may be my political rival, but she is an elected member of the Lok Sabha. To my knowledge, there are no allegations of extortion or corruption against her. The way she was treated on Wednesday is shameful for a civilized and democratic society. Every individual in a civilized society should protest against such brutality.”
The attack on Moitra occurred on Wednesday afternoon while she was attending an internal party meeting at the Trinamool office near National Highway 34 in Nadia district.
During the meeting, protesters reportedly gathered outside the party office, throwing eggs and dung. Moitra was also heard being verbally abused by the demonstrators.
Following the incident, she went live on Facebook from the second floor of the party office, expressing her anger not only at the attackers but also at a faction within her own party.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee condemned the attack on his parliamentary colleague in a lengthy social media post. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack on Moitra.
However, state BJP president and Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya denied any involvement, stating, “The attackers were disgruntled Trinamool Congress workers.”
