New Delhi, August 10: The Rajya Sabha witnessed continued uproar on Monday. Amidst opposition slogans, the session was adjourned shortly after it began, until noon. Prior to this, BJP MP Tarun Chugh highlighted the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab and the rising illegal drug trade.
Chugh stated that a significant drug network has been operational in the border state for a long time, leading to an increasing number of youth falling prey to addiction and a rise in criminal activities.
He pointed out that the law and order situation in Punjab has worsened due to crime and drug abuse. Citing a 2024 crime report, he noted that Punjab recorded 6,060 drug-related cases in just one year, making it the leading state in drug possession cases.
Chugh mentioned that excessive drug use has resulted in 89 deaths in Punjab last year, with this year’s toll rising to 106. He emphasized that incidents of shootings, robberies, and other crimes are on the rise.
The BJP MP accused the Punjab government of failing to curb drug abuse and prevent crime. He claimed that weapons and drugs are continuously being sent into Punjab via drones from Pakistan. Chugh remarked that the impact of drugs is severely visible in both the villages and cities of Punjab.
He warned that Punjab is in danger, citing the increasing violence in the state, with ongoing murders and bomb blasts. According to him, there have been around 21 bomb blasts at police stations in Punjab. He also referenced an attack on the Punjab police headquarters involving a rocket launcher.
Chugh asserted that serious crimes like murder are frequently occurring, with newspapers filled with reports of criminal activities. He accused the Punjab government of being completely ineffective in maintaining law and order, leading to a rise in mafia influence. He also raised concerns about the conditions in prisons, stating that Punjab’s jails have become akin to studios.
