India Aims for 50 Annual Space Launches by 2030, Driven by Startups and ISROs Innovations

New Delhi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : India is gearing up to reach new heights in its space endeavors in the coming years. Pawan K. Goyenka, Chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe), announced an ambitious goal of conducting 50 space launches annually by 2030. He emphasized that the growing involvement of the private sector, combined with ISRO’s technical prowess, is solidifying India’s role in the global space economy.

In a recent post on social media platform X, Goyenka noted that five years ago, India made a historic decision to open its space sector to private companies. This decision aimed to provide ISRO with opportunities to work on new and advanced technologies while allowing private industries to expand significantly in the space arena. He stated that both objectives are now visibly materializing.

Goyenka highlighted that the number of space-related startups in India has surged from just a handful to over 450 today. These private firms are no longer limited to developing prototypes; they are now achieving success in complex areas such as space launches and satellite manufacturing.

One Indian private company has already successfully launched a rocket into orbit, indicating that the nation’s private space industry has progressed beyond experimental phases to develop commercial capabilities.

According to Goyenka, the primary challenge now is to scale up operations in this sector. To address this, India has set a target of 50 launches per year. He stressed the necessity for collaboration between the government and private industries to achieve this goal. Technical advancements alone will not suffice; there is a pressing need to enhance manufacturing capabilities, produce more rockets and satellites, and develop new technologies.

Since the initiation of private participation in the space sector, India’s space ecosystem has rapidly evolved. Government data reveals that in 2014, there was only one startup in the space domain, whereas by August 2026, the number had climbed to approximately 440.

Currently, India’s space economy is valued at around $9 billion, with projections suggesting it could grow to between $40 billion and $45 billion within the next decade. Private investment in the sector has also seen a significant uptick, rising from $100.5 million in 2021-22 to $618.5 million by March 2026.

Goyenka stressed that private industries need to move beyond individual projects and develop large-scale manufacturing capabilities. This includes producing more rockets, satellites, and enhancing launch capacities, alongside advancing new space technologies, which will position India competitively on the global stage.

He indicated that ISRO will continue to focus on pushing technological boundaries, while private companies will work on transforming these technologies into commercial products and services.

Several companies in India’s burgeoning private space sector are making significant contributions. Firms like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixel, and Digantara are involved in launch vehicles, satellite manufacturing, Earth observation, and space technology-based services.

Goyenka’s remarks come on the heels of ISRO’s recent successful launch of the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite via the GSLV-F17 rocket. This satellite, designed for operation in geosynchronous orbit, is India’s first imaging satellite of its kind and plays a crucial role in disaster management, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and strategic oversight. Weighing about 2,367 kilograms, EOS-05 is now the heaviest satellite launched by GSLV, showcasing India’s growing technological capabilities.

Goyenka believes that India stands at a significant opportunity, stating, “Make in India, launch from India, and provide services to the world from India.” He is confident that the country’s space sector will not only achieve scientific milestones but also contribute to economic growth, job creation, and technological leadership. He expressed optimism that India is rapidly advancing towards elevating its space sector to new heights, both symbolically and practically.
