
Mumbai, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : The global success of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is drawing attention from European nations. During the Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai, Sean McWilliams, head of fintech and payments at Ireland’s Investment Development Agency (IDA), expressed a keen interest in understanding the rapid advancement of UPI. He highlighted the potential applications of this model in Ireland, the European Union, and other markets.
McWilliams emphasized that the primary goal of his visit to India is to grasp the intricacies of its evolving fintech and digital payment ecosystem. He also aims to identify how Ireland can play a collaborative role for Indian companies planning international expansion.
“UPI has become a central pillar of India’s payment system, and countries worldwide are searching for solutions that simplify, accelerate, and enhance payment processes,” he stated.
He is particularly interested in the implications of UPI’s success for Ireland and the EU. McWilliams is eager to explore possible similarities and collaboration opportunities between Ireland’s fintech innovations and the UPI model.
The advancements made by India in digital payments have become a significant subject of study globally. By connecting a large population to digital financial services, India has created a broad and inclusive payment system, offering valuable lessons for other countries.

On October 14, Ireland will host an international AI summit under its EU presidency, bringing together global companies, policymakers, and technology experts. The summit will address challenges, opportunities, and key trends in AI, positioning Ireland as a center for AI innovation.
McWilliams concluded by stating that Ireland can offer significant advantages to Indian companies planning global expansion, including access to the European market, a robust tech ecosystem, innovation-friendly policies, and a presence in global financial services.
