New Delhi, June 13: Stand-up comedian Pranit More has issued an apology amid online backlash regarding a viral video featuring a “370 rupee biryani.” In a video shared on Instagram, More acknowledged the criticism he faced and requested another chance from the public.
In the video, he stated, “I wanted to address this, but my Instagram account was suspended. You may have seen the crowd-work video circulating on social media, and it has led to a lot of hatred directed towards me.”
More admitted that he made a mistake by not intervening when inappropriate comments were made during his performance. “I believe I deserve this hatred. During the crowd-work session, a man made several derogatory remarks. Everyone was laughing, and I got carried away. It was a lapse in my judgment. I realize now that I should have taken a stand, but I did not.”
He acknowledged that his response inadvertently amplified those comments and worsened the situation. “I gave those comments a platform, and it escalated from there. I want to apologize to anyone who was hurt by this. I am fully cooperating with the authorities regarding any legal actions. I ask for another chance to improve. This has been a learning experience for me. I am working on myself and my content, and you will see the changes in my future work.”
The controversy arose from comments made during a stand-up comedy show in Gurugram, which led the National Commission for Women (NCW) to summon More and web developer Himanshu Jangra. The commission expressed that the remarks seemed to justify sexual coercion and non-consensual behavior towards women.
The issue began when Jangra recounted a ‘date’ during the show, claiming he spent 370 rupees on a plate of chicken biryani. According to his story, when the woman later asked him to drop her home, he demanded sexual favors in return for the money spent. More was seen laughing at this comment during the performance. Amid rising protests, a Gurugram company also terminated Jangra’s employment.
