Dehradun, March 14: The sacred land of Uttarakhand is renowned for its pristine beauty, holy rivers, and spiritual sites. Among these is Shani Dham, located on the banks of the Yamuna River in the development area of Dehradun.
This temple has become a major center for spiritual peace and devotion. Its mythological significance is widely recognized. On Saturday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shed light on its importance.
He shared a special video of the temple on his official social media platform, X. Along with this, he urged people to appreciate the sanctity of the site. The Chief Minister stated, “Shani Dham, situated on the banks of the Yamuna River in Dehradun, is a center of faith for countless devotees. This temple is known for its serene atmosphere and spiritual energy. Special prayers are held here on Saturdays. Be sure to visit this holy site when you come to Dehradun.”
The temple is known for its tranquil environment, lush greenery, and spiritual energy. According to ancient beliefs, the Pandavas constructed this four-story temple during their exile. It is famous for its unique wooden-stone architecture (Koti Banala style), which protects it from calamities.
Additionally, this temple is believed to be around 800 years old and is considered the abode of Shani Dev, the brother of Yamuna. According to scriptures, Shani Dev and Mother Yamuna are siblings, both descendants of the Sun God. Yamuna is the daughter of the sage Sunjna, while Shani Dev is the son of Chhaya.
This is why, when the doors of Yamunotri Dham open, Shani Dev’s palanquin travels to bid farewell to his sister Yamuna on Akshaya Tritiya. When the doors of Yamunotri Dham close on Bhai Dooj, Shani Dev returns to take his sister Yamuna back. Throughout the winter, the brother and sister reside in their respective temples in Kharsali village.
