These temples were constructed by the Katyuri kings between the 7th and 11th centuries and served as the capital of ancient Kartikeyapur (Baijnath). It is said that the Katyuri kings received a divine vision from Lord Shiva in a dream, instructing them to construct the temple in a single night. Following this dream, the king gathered artisans and had the temple built from stones overnight. Legend has it that a group of 18 temples was completed that very night.
