Dehradun/Jaipur/Bhopal, 24 August (Kiran News): A cloudburst struck Chamoli district in Uttarakhand’s Tharali region late Friday night, triggering flash floods and landslides that caused extensive damage. The incident occurred between 12:30 AM and 1:00 AM, submerging several houses, including the SDM residence, under debris. Multiple vehicles were also trapped beneath the rubble.

According to Chamoli ADM Vivek Prakash, the sudden flooding caused severe destruction. A 20-year-old girl was buried under the debris and is missing, along with one other person. Rescue operations began immediately, with NDRF and SDRF teams reaching the site during the night.

Flood-like conditions emerged near Tunri Gadhera, close to Sagwada village, where mud and debris accumulated around buildings near the Pindar River. The Karnaprayag-Gwaldam National Highway, which connects to Tharali, has been blocked near Ming Gadhera due to the landslide.

Heavy Rains Disrupt Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, the Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert in 11 districts. As a precaution, schools in Chittorgarh, Baran, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Jhalawar, Kota, Bundi, Dungarpur, and Bhilwara were closed on Saturday.

Himachal Pradesh on High Alert

Himachal Pradesh is also bracing for intense rainfall, with the weather department issuing an alert for heavy to very heavy rain from 23 to 26 August. Landslides and persistent rain have already led to the closure of 347 roads, including the National Highway-305. Since the onset of monsoon on 20 June, the state has reported 295 fatalities due to rain-related incidents.

As heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc across northern India, multiple states remain on high alert, with rescue teams on standby and local administrations urging caution.
